The historical Weylin building in Brooklyn, completed in 1875, was originally the home of the former Williamsburg Savings Bank and has since gone through a meticulous restoration and conversion into a gorgeous venue. When we approached longtime client DeJuan Stroud, author and floral and event designer based in New York City, about collaborating with us in the space, the stars aligned and two gorgeous designs were brought to life.
The first look, staged in both the Main Rotunda and the Oculus Dome, was the perfect marriage between classic and contemporary. DeJuan arranged the stunning floral in a mix of traditional and modern clear vessels in such a way that guests could appreciate Weylin’s breathtaking domes and the beautiful floral arrangements by gazing into the mirrored tabletop surface. The result? A magnificent, thoughtful 360-degree experience.
The second look was styled in the Gallery, a fresh, raw space featuring exposed brick and unique tilework. This look drew upon the Gallery’s rustic-meets-industrial vibe, accented with bold, alternating chinaware and eye-catching floral. We styled this look with three seating options — the coordinating Loft Dining Bench, the sleek Bellini chairs, and the rustic Cross Back chairs — each chair bringing its own unique character and charm to the look.
We chatted with DeJuan about his inspiration, favorite trends, and thoughts on design. Check it out!
Could you describe the two looks you designed and the inspiration behind them?
I love the look of traditional and modern together, so for the wedding table, I incorporated a large traditional arrangement – in a scale that makes sense for the vast space – with modern glass vases with more sculptural designed flowers and modern crystal candleholders. For the lower level I was inspired by the color of the tile detail in the floors, the iron columns and low brick ceilings.
Weylin has so many unique architectural and design details woven throughout the space. Did your designs echo any of these elements?
Not only did they echo – the top of the table reflected the architecture! In keeping with a more modern look to the table AND to take advantage of the incredible details in the dome, moldings and columns, I covered the entire top of the table with mirror. The effect was sensational.
Are there any colors, styles, patterns, or textures that you or your clients have been gravitating toward lately?
I’ve been intrigued by shades of millennial pink, which is a terrific palette for parties and events.
Do you have a favorite Party Rental Ltd. product or linen?
Rattan linen in all shades and Flaxen linen – these linens create the most beautiful foil for a tabletop design.
What do you like about working with us?
Your service and dedication to design.
What is your design philosophy?
Be thoughtful with the design. Add detail, upon detail, upon detail, and make sure every detail is beautiful.
